Ruthenium is used in the hardening of platinum and palladium in the metallurgical industry. It is also used in electrical contacts with high resistance to corrosion, in the production of dental alloys, in protecting coatings against oxidation and in the production of high mechanical resistance accessories. Palladium alloys with 4,5% of ruthenium are used in jewelry and ornaments. When added to titanium, it improves considerably the corrosion resistance.
Noteworthy is its use as catalyst in the hydrogenation process of carbonyls.
